At the CEATEC exhibition recently in Japan, TDK show off prototype optical discs with 1TB capacity. This technique is done by making the recording layer 16 at medium, each with a capacity of 32GB. In comparison, Blu-ray has a capacity of 25GB or 50GB (dual layer) and a maximum of four layers.
This disc has a very high light transmittance, with 95.1 percent for each layer and 72.6 percent for the entire disk. Part of the material used for the creation of the new disk has been used for Blu-ray media, so that durability has been proven, said a representative from TDK.

Speed reading from the new disc is also said synonymous with Blu-ray as well, while the symbol error rate for reading out the data ranging from 1 x 10-5 to 1 x 10-4, or low enough for commercial production. Thickness is one of the shortcomings that need to be addressed. Recording layer Blu-ray needs to 100μm or less, while TDK is 260μm thick disk, causing the optical lens distortion.
